COFFEE CULTURE

Continental Europe’s first Starbucks coffee house opened in Zurich in March 2001. Switzerland was picked as the chain’s inaugural site because of its coffee culture. Don’t expect to see the Swiss lining up with their to-go cups and ordering a skinny cappuccino before rushing off to the office. They are much more likely to hang out in one of the Italian-style coffee bars, which offer real Italian coffee and all that implies: good discussion and quality time with friends that could last for hours. This is also a way for moms to meet up with one another, along with their kids. Where the Germans often include cakes in their coffee ritual, the Swiss stick to the caffeine kick and stimulating conversation.
